An important turn of events -- people are willing to forgo simple things like drag and drop to have a simpler world that still gets the job done. The whole basis of NetSuite is just this. Sure working in a web browser seems like taking the computing interface back several years, but a much simpler world for people to keep up with and a world where people can run their businesses and have the information they need.

Microsoft's big installs have to go -- Microsoft has just cost me personally half my entire allocation of downloads for this month on my cut-price broadband allocation. A 'free' update of Windows XP Service Pack 2 has cost me $35. If it were possible to have this as a web-based update, it would simply come in the downloads of each page as and when needed.

They have a hosted solution -- so the value is the same i.e. being able to have accountants seeing financials from anywhere etc. However, the features list needs to be examined, as with the update method -- how do they keep across tax changes etc.

I would want to know how many developers they have in maintaining this software and how can they maintain it with so little income. In other words, without a large company like Oracle supporting it, can they guarantee they will be there in six months time?

Thinking of ways to improve the NetSuite Site

This morning I read a document supplied by an SEO on how to improve the Australian NetSuite site. Their suggestions were 19 pages long -- some of it good value. However, a lot of it was less than interesting.

In brief, I think that the site just does not have enough information on it. We have loads of information that could be made available -- such as a good glossary for SMEs to be guided through the sea of terminology. We also have our own case studies and information about the way the software has been modified to meet Australian conditions.

What I really find incredible are the Australian business sites. Very few businesses here in Australia really have it all together as far as the web goes. I am talking to at least 15 to 20 different businesses each day in this job as a Business Development Executive; each time I need to talk to a new one, I look them up on the web. Well now, there are many, many businesses without even a web presence! Second, it is so difficult to find some of the businesses -- they have such unusual domain names. And nine times out of ten the business is listed as number six, seven and eight on a search engine page, with sites that point to them higher up the page. It is only the really large businesses that seem to have it together as far as the web is concerned. It is about time SMEs really paid attention to getting themselves on the web. Customers and business development people like me are looking for you and we cannot find you!

Always feel that we are starting our work week too early on Monday mornings. USA is still in Sunday -- 7:30 p.m. -- the sun has just gone down about 20 minutes ago on Sunday. Here we are getting going at work 9:30 a.m. Feels like it is still Sunday really!

But work is good and so even though it does not feel right to be working, it is time to get going and make sure NetSuite gets on the map better in Australia than it is now! And there is only one way to do that -- get more people using it!

So here goes -- contact more people and get more people using it!

So I work for NetReturn in Australia and spend most of my working day talking about NetSuite. I am interested in NetSuite not only from a professional level, but also from a personal level. I really think that this is the way software needs to go. Companies do not need to manage and build software -- their job is to get on and make their own business happen. When businesses try to develop their own stuff it generally does not get built properly, or within a reasonable budget -- budgets always blow out.

Then there is the cost of maintaining that software over time. In talking with companies, I have found that many companies spend up to 90% more money on the upkeep of software than it cost to acquire or build. When businesses build their own software it is hard to detect how much is spent on maintenance and how much is spent on eternal development -- however.

On a different note -- we got a write up in an Australian mag -- iT News. Looks like a good article -- but as with many mags, very superficial. When are they going to write something more that people can take away as solid information and not just teasers?

NetSuite contains all the software a business may need -- suitable for businesses of 2 employees upwards to about 150 employees.
